HEY GIRL! YOU WANNA BE MY FRIEND?

"Hey girl, we should hang out sometime" Like, how do you ask another girl to be your friend without being awkward? Let's face it, most of the friends we had growing up, we grew apart from, had disagreements or they are a million miles away. True friends and true love have one thing in common, they are both hard to find. Sorry Drake, I can't agree with you on this one. What you mean, "No new friends"?

Listen, you have to date these "potential friends" before you enter into an entire friendship with them. Not every homegirl can sit in the kitchen with you and your mama and drink wine. Not every homeboy can come through and smoke a cigar with you and your uncles. There are indeed, levels to this ish. Test it out. If you hang out with them for the first time, and the whole night, you're sitting there wishing you would have drove your own car so you can make an excuse to leave early, you can't call that homie back.

TRUE STORY: There was this young lady that I would see all the time. We always spoke to each other, cracked jokes, complemented each others hair or outfit and maybe even carried short conversations. I'm thinking to myself, "this girl is really cool! that's refreshing!". One day, she suggests that we get together and hang out for a night on the town. Cool. She calls me up, we make plans, I get dressed and she tells me that a couple of other girls will be joining us. And to put the icing on the cake, she was going to be the designated driver. "this is going to be an awesome girls night", I thought. Well guys, everything that glitter ain't gold. I spent most of that night BY MYSELF watching purses because she and her friends were in every man's face that came into the bar. Ya'll I have never wished so hard for some wings to fly up out of there. Now, they got the dudes looking at me like I'm the ugly friend. Man, please. I'm sexy and my hands soft. So much for a girl's night out.

Look, your mom wasn't lying when she said "Birds of a feather often flock together" (or however that saying goes). Be careful of the groups you attach yourself to. You want the type of friends that ask if you like the "usie" of you all before they post it and tag you in it on social media. Those be the real MVP's.

As weird as this may sound, we scope out our "potential friends" just as we do our "potential baes" (Ha! that was my first time saying bae. I hate myself.) We look at how they carry themselves, what they talk about, things they do, what they post on social media, all of that. Because the truth is, no one wants to be attached to trash, be it friend or bae.

Listen, the moral of the story is, peer pressure is real. So make sure your peers are pressuring you to be a better you. We have enough ain't $h!+ people in this world already.

The other moral of the story is, I have like seven best friends in my head just from social media alone. Hey ya'll!

The Good Girl

"Wait, am I going to get in trouble if I do that?" I`ve always been that "by the book" type of person. If I didn`t get permission to do it, it`s not happening. Yep, you guessed it, my friends hated me in high school.  I was the one with the curfew at midnight. No, I couldn`t sneak inside of the house because my mother and father were always sitting on the couch in the front room waiting for me to get in. And if I wasn`t home by midnight, I had a five minute grace period before they were blowing up my little flip phone. "Where are you? Do you know what time it is?" "Yes mom, I`m down the street." We were really just getting off of the highway but it was no red lights and my friend had a heavy foot.  *Shout Out to Laster and Sophia Douglas.* I was always the "good girl" and that was NOT a compliment. Being the good girl meant that you were stuck up, weird, boring, funny acting, etc. I`m actually all of those things when I`m hun...

BLACK AND CAREFREE

"While ya'll being distracted by this, look what's happening over here..." Ya'll know exactly who those types of people are on your friends list, don't you? You can't share a few funny memes, indulge in a hot topic discussion or post pictures of your lit brunch without somebody saying "Some of ya'll black folks be worried about the wrong thing!" And yes, some black folks ARE worried about the wrong thing BUT some black folks can worry about more than one thing at once. I mean damn, don't ya'll want a break sometimes? Photo: My Mama. Today's topic is on being BLACK AND CAREFREE . I wanted to make some heart warming post about black folks being able to be happy even in the face of adversity. Being able have joy and be aware at the same time. I had all intentions of posting photos of myself and my friends full of smiles. Making jokes about being black, educated and well spoken but being able to turn that off to be b...

SHIFT YOUR ENERGY

"Get ready for a shift." Aight so boom... I used to think that only crazy, unfortunate things happened to me . Like, I was the only one to be chubby and teased as a child, I was the only clumsy kid who dropped everything, I never really won anything, I was the only one in the world who tried to make a mother's day spread and it end up being too salty to eat. At one point, I started calling myself "Bad Luck Brit". Whatever energy you put out comes back to you. Photo: Sierra Campbell Because of those experiences, I went through most of life almost always expecting things to turn out for the worst. I mean, I would think of the most horrible case scenario for every situation. Me: *Gets a new job* Also, Me: "Watch, I'm gone get fired for this pink hair and nose ring." Me: *Meets a nice man* Also, Me: "Watch, he gone have a secret relationship, a hidden baby and commitment issues." See what I'm saying? There...
